Working with the Dashboards

Pop-up Menus

The Dashboards view has two pop-up menus, one for adjusting the view (View Pop-up Menu) and one for elements (Element Pop-up Menu).

Right-clicking the background of the Dashboards opens the view pop-up menu, which allows you to define and use several display and background properties. To learn more about the menu, see the Dashboards Pop-up Menu section.

Right-clicking an element opens the element pop-up menu, which allows you to configure the element and add a new relation, among other things. To learn more about the menu, see the Element Pop-up Menu of the Dashboards section.

Create New Elements

To create a new element, do the following:

In the case the Tool Palette is visible, select the desired element from the Elements section and drag-and-drop it into the view. If the new element is dragged on top of some other element on the dashboard, the new element will become a child of that element. If the new element is dragged on top of empty canvas, the element will become a child of the top element of the scorecard. In both cases, the hierarchy visible in the Scorecard Navigator is updated accordingly.

1.	Right-click a scorecard symbol or an element symbol. A pop-up menu opens.

2.	In the pop-up menu, select Create Element... New [element type] (e.g. Measure).

3.	A new element symbol is created to the view. The default name of the element is the name of the element type.

In addition to creating actual elements, you can create also view instances (i.e. only the element symbol is displayed in the view with no actual element reference affecting e.g. calculation) of elements to the Dashboard. To add a view instance, do the following:

1.	Drag some element from the Elements section in the Tool Palette to the Dashboards view with the Ctrl key held down.

2.	The Element Selection dialog opens. Select the scorecard that contains the desired element in the Scorecards section and select the desired element(s) in the "Elements in the selected scorecard" section. Click the arrow pointing right to add the desired element(s) to the list.

3.	Click OK to add view instances of the elements selected in the window.

Delete Elements and Element Symbols

To delete any element displayed in the Dashboards view from the model, do the following:

1.	Select the element to be deleted.

2.	Press Shift+Delete or right-click and select Delete Element from the pop-up menu. A confirmation window opens, asking you if you really want to delete the selected element. Any possible subelements of the element are removed as well.

3.	Click Yes. The element is removed from the model.

To remove any element symbols from the active Dashboards view, do the following:

1.	Select the element symbol you wish to remove from the view.

2.	Verify that the symbol can be removed, i.e. it is not automatically included in the view or it belongs to some other scorecard than the current one.

3.	Press the Delete key or right-click on the element and select Remove from View from the pop-up menu. The element symbol is removed from the current view.

Create New Relations

To create a relation between two elements in the Dashboard.

1.	In the case the Navigation Frame is visible, select Relation from the Shapes section.

2.	Drag-and-drop the relation to the element that should be at the other end of the relation.

3.	Release the mouse button over the target element. Now the relation arrow is tied to the mouse cursor with the starting point at the element over which you dragged the relation.

4.	Find the element with which the first element has relation and click the mouse button over that element. The relation is now created.

A relation can be added also in the following way:

1.	Right-click the source element. A pop-up menu opens.

2.	Select Add Relation.

3.	Drag the mouse, without clicking, to the target element. A relation arrow is created. You can move the arrow's tip with the cursor.

4.	Click on the target element. This creates a relation of medium strength, represented by an arrow linking the two elements.

Modify Relation Properties or Delete Relation

To modify or delete a relation between two elements in the Dashboard.

1.	Right-click the relation. A pop-up menu opens.

2.	Select the desired strength grade: Weak, Medium, or Strong. The menu closes and the line thickness of the relation changes to reflect its new strength.

3.	To show that the influence is negative, select the Negative influence option.

4.	Select Remove Relation or Turn direction as required.

Calculate Correlation Factor

To evaluate the correctness of an assumed relation between two elements, you can calculate the actual correlation factor between the two selected series of the elements, based on historical data.

Display and Modify Element Symbols and Properties

You can view and change the details of any element from the Dashboard. However, any changes made to an element's identifier and properties from the Dashboard will take effect throughout the model, not only in the Dashboard.

•To open the Element Properties window: right-click the element and select Element Properties from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, you can simply double-click the element.

•To open the Symbol Layout window: right-click the element and select Symbol Layout from the pop-up menu. In the Symbol Layout window, changes can be made to the appearance of the element symbol.

•To change the name of an element: Select the desired element and press F2. Input the modified name and press Enter.

•To change a picture visible as a picture item in the element symbol: Right-click over the picture and select the "Select Picture..." option from the pop-up menu.

Hide or Show Elements

You can define the appearance of the Dashboard with Element type buttons.

You can select which elements are shown by clicking the Element Type buttons. Once the Element type button is selected, elements of that type are shown. If the element type button is unselected, elements of that type are hidden. There is a button for every element type in the model regardless of whether there are elements of that type in the chosen scorecard. The button for the top element is shown only when there is a reference to the top element in the scorecard.

Note: All the element types are selected by default. If there is a relation between two elements types, the relation is displayed if both elements are selected or the group elements option is selected in conjunction with the element types.

Find and Clear Paths

With this option, you can visualize how an element affects other elements in the same scorecard (path forward), and how it is affected by other elements (path back).

To calculate and clear paths for an element in the Dashboard:

1.	Right-click the element. A pop-up menu opens.

2.	To find a path, select the Find Paths option of the menu, and select forward, backward, or both paths. The elements constituting the path are highlighted.

3.	To clear the paths for an element select the Clear Paths option. The elements in the path return to their original appearance.

Tip: You can clear the paths also by clicking the view background.

Resize Elements

You can resize elements in the Dashboards view similarly as in many other Windows applications. Whenever you click an element, eight resize handles appear around the element. When you move your mouse cursor over the resize handles, the cursor changes to an arrow indicating the directions where you can resize the element. When the cursor is visible, hold down the left mouse button and drag the element to the desired size. Resizing the element from the corners changes both the width and the height of the element simultaneously. Note that you can resize elements over other elements, i.e. other elements are not moved when resizing elements.

Rearrange Elements

You can easily move all elements within the Dashboard.

•To move an element: Select the element and drag it to the destination location. Moving elements with the Alt key held down frees the elements from the grid.

•To select multiple elements one by one and move them: Hold down the Ctrl key while selecting individual elements. The selected elements can be moved by dragging them to the destination location. You can also click the left mouse button on an empty area in the view, hold the button down and drag a rectangle over the desired elements to select them.
